Who is a good candidate for abdominoplasty (tummy tuck)?

There are many people who are unsatisfied with the contour and shape of their abdomen. Even patients who maintain an active lifestyle, eat healthy, and exercise regularly can have areas excess tissue and fat in the lower abdomen that is resistant to toning. In addition, there are many women who have redundant skin and sagging of their lower abdominal wall after pregnancy. For these groups of patients the ideal procedure is an abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck.  Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure to remove excess skin and fatty tissue from the middle and lower abdomen and to tighten muscles of the abdominal wall. These procedures are done not as a weight loss procedure, but in order to tone and firm the lower abdomen, bringing it into appropriate proportion with the remainder of the body. The extent of the surgery will depend mainly on the patient’s concerns, and body type as well as the change that can be affected.

What do the procedures generally entail for abdominoplasty (tummy tuck)?

This procedure is performed under general anesthesia. This generally takes place in the hospital, or the surgery center depending on the extent of surgery required. The average procedure time is typically 2 to 4 hours, and may include 24 to 48 hours in the hospital postoperatively.The incisions for the surgery along the bikini line in the lower portion of the abdomen. Through these incisions the redundant skin of the abdominal wall can be removed, the muscles of the lower abdomen can be realigned and tightened, in the upper hips and waist can be contoured appropriately.

These incisions are closed using absorbable suture eliminating the need for removal after surgery.after the surgery, fluffy dressings are placed over top of the incision and the patient will wear loose fitting support garment. they will then be transferred to the recovery room where they may be able to be discharged home or stay in the hospital or surrounding hotel. Owing to the individual requirements of each patient, there is a wide variability in the surgical procedure.
